An action alert from the National Association for Child Care Resource and Referral urging you to contact your local representatives to support background check legislation. Thanks again to our Congressman Andre Carson for introducing the bill in the House.

Parents Want Children to be Safe in Child Care
State child care laws vary greatly. Parents should know that their children are safe in child care and that someone with a violent criminal history is not licensed to provide child care or is not working in a child care center.
Parents logically assume that a child care license means child care providers have had a background check. But, that’s not the case in too many states. Only 10 states require child care providers to have a comprehensive background check: a fingerprint check against state and federal records, as well as a check of the state child abuse registry and sex offender registry. The only way to make sure that convicted felons are not licensed or paid to care for children is through a background check that uses fingerprints. A name check only is simply not effective.
Urge your Senators/Representative today to support S. 581 in the Senate and both H.R. 1711 and H.R. 1726 in the House to require comprehensive background checks for child care providers. Children should be safe in child care.
